John Martin Reservoir, Stilling Basin Sediment Removal and Dewatering

The project consisted of dewatering the stilling basin to remove sediment that had built up over the last 70 years for the USACE, Albuquerque District. Our scope of work included pre-construction services including development of work plans, the baseline schedule, safety plans, quality control submittals, and construction plans. McMillen Jacobs self-performed the construction including:

  • Site preparation
  • Dewatering the stilling basin (1,200-feet long x 250-feet wide x 20-feet deep)
  • Sediment (including silt sand) removal in the stilling basin (55,000 cubic yards)
  • Cleaning of all sediment in the stilling basin
  • Sediment disposal to drying area
  • Repairs to spillway including sawcutting of the deteriorated concrete and pouring new concrete
  • Relocation of sediment from drying bed to final location
  • Repaving of asphalt access road (100 tons) to handle heavy equipment
  • Dust control
  • Restored/re-seeded 11 acres
  • Cleared out 2,200 weep holes on basin floor that were crusted over with sediment
